around here…

tuesday // august 20

…there’s been 3 major fires surrounding us and it’s made the air super hazy.

crazy hazy sunrise #nofilter

wednesday // august 21

…work has been out of control. i hate leaving my desk like this at the end of the day because then this is what i see when i walk in the next day, but i’m in the middle of a hundred things that if i move something, it may get lost.

to quote the drunken david hasselhoff, #thisisamess. must. clean. now. #workinggirlproblems

…we ate an early birthday dinner for matt and then we finally splurged and picked up barstools for our kitchen counter, (plus a special purchase that wasn’t planned).

taking home some delicious goodies from IKEA!

thursday // august 22

…my super awesome hubby assembled the gorgeous new tv stand and the barstools before i got home!

super stoked about this gorgeous new tv stand from IKEA. isn't it purdy? and it was all assembled by my guy!

…we spent the evening at back to school night. shuffling around gibson’s school, class to class. perfect for a man who didn’t care much for school. 😉

Untitled

…this is my view. makes me thankful i am not in school anymore.

Untitled

friday // august 23

…i got a new phone!

Untitled

and the difference in quality and clarity between this one and my old 3gs is astounding!

Untitled

…one of my favorite features is the front facing camera. it’s about time i don’t have to guess what i’m getting in the frame.

Untitled

…the boys are in love with siri and they’re not afraid to tell her just how they feel.

Untitled

…a little birdie told me that homegoods had cuptakes iphone cases for sale….and that little birdie was correct! their cases are $13 in the store…so i got 2!

Untitled

Untitled

…we like to run errands together.

Untitled

…sunsets are pretty.

Untitled

saturday // august 24

…michaelangelo prepares for our weekend guests to arrive.

Untitled

…scrapping, monopoly, dominoes, drinking, call of duty, chess, chick-fil-a and eclipse happened.

Untitled

…cheri and i swooned over edward and jacob.

Untitled

sunday // august 25

…we let someone else make breakfast for us.

Untitled

…we goof around at the table.

Untitled

…i got all 4 boys to stand still and smile.

Untitled

…friends stay friends for 25+ years.

Untitled

…this girl makes me smile!

Untitled

…this kid steals my heart on the daily.

Untitled

…i scored on clothes and accessories at the mall with cheri before they headed home.

Untitled

i hope your week was full and happy!

weekly wrap up 2013 // week 32+33

weekly wrapup_4x4 copy

what pictures do you paint with your photos? do they tell the raw truth or do you cover up real life with filters and smiles?

this week, i’m taking you behind the lens and telling you what’s really going on. because life isn’t all sunshine and roses. but i know that it certainly doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

WEEK 32

monday // august 5

not wanting his picture taken, gibson ate his belated birthday ice cream quietly while marshall was enthusiastic about every single bite.

Untitled

after watching BOLT last weekend, marshall felt it necessary to stick his head out of the window while we drove home. (picture taken by gibson). i wanted him to have fun, and experience how the wind felt in his face, but i made him wait until we got into our neighborhood so i was going a bit slower. don’t worry, he had his seatbelt on.

Untitled

tuesday // august 6

schedule pickup day and as a seventh grader, gibson finally has some classes upstairs. he saw some girls chatting and playing with their phones in the hallway and walked a little taller when he saw them. he was very comfortable walking around this year but didn’t want me to take his picture. sometimes i just have to sneak a shot when i can get it.

Untitled

wednesday // august 7

my parents are in oregon so my daddy asked if i would buy him (and us) a lottery ticket. the jackpot was big, but this baby wasn’t a winner. i used to dream of what i would do if i won the lottery. who i would help and how many places i would shop. but at this time in my life, there’s not much time for this kind of fanciful dreaming. besides, we don’t play the lottery anyways.

Untitled

it felt great to sketch again. with so much project life happening lately, i’ve been missing this craft. but underneath this sketch, i’ve also been struggling with the idea of perfectionism, what the word means and how it affects certain aspects of my life. therefore, i will hold myself to a standard of grace, not perfection, as tough as it may be.

IMG_4162

thursday // august 8

waiting at a light and thought a selfie would be a good way to pass the time. i feel like crap but i liked my hair. can we still feel pretty while feeling terrible?

Untitled

friday // august 9

seriously, where the heck is john? one day he just came up missing from this set of magnets i keep on the filing cabinet at the office and i think yoko may have had something to do with it.

Untitled

it’s friday night and i’ve been feeling this cold coming on since yesterday. i feel awful but thankful to have preseason to watch.

Untitled

saturday // august 10

i NEED this top, desperately. and i will confess that i really like how blouses look on other people but am a bit afraid of them. when i see them on the rack, i honestly don’t know what to do with them. and if i don’t know how to wear it, i’ll just avoid it.

Untitled

this was my attempt at trying to be creative when i was trying to recover from that nasty cold. needless to say, none of these things happened but it was fun to feel motivated to craft again.
Untitled

sunday // august 11

we took a little trip to marshall’s school so he could see where he’s be playing and learning everyday.

Untitled

he’s still super afraid of the monkey bars.

Untitled

when i asked for a picture, this is the smile i got. i know it must be annoying for him to have had some kind of camera in his face all these years but he can be very gracious with me. i totally understand how that might feel so i am happy when he even looks my way without a funny face.

Untitled

i don’t normally wear leggings outside of the house but i was barely starting to feel better and we were just walking down the street to the school and park. i shouldn’t be so self conscience but i am.

Untitled

my view at the park while marshall plays and matt and gibson walk around the walkway.

Untitled

no make-up today and i haven’t washed my hair in 3 days. being sick sucks.

Untitled

watching them chat and walk made me smile. gibson’s growing up and i like the relationship he has with us.

Untitled

time for an otter pop. did you know that a box of 500 otter pops can last over 3 years? #cantgetridofthem

Untitled

my boys love the 3d glasses from the movies. they pop the lenses out and act like little nerds. 🙂

Untitled

WEEK 33

monday // august 12

the first day of school pictures didn’t go as well as i imagined. not sure why i expect little angels to stand straight with their little hands clasped in front of them. i have real kids. real boys who make faces at the camera and who mess around with each other while i try to get the perfect shot of them both looking at me. but no matter how many times i ask them to stand up straight! look at me! stop tugging on your brother! i always end up with a shot or two like this that remind me of the nature of their relationship and that when i let go and let them be themselves, i get shots that really show them off.

Untitled

Untitled

stats: gibson // age 12 // grade 7 #hessocool

Untitled

well, i really just wanted a picture of me and the boys before school and apparently, that’s what i got. ended up going with the flow of marshall trying to avoid the camera and got one of my favorite shots.

we certainly aren't bored // #heyrhonna #rhonnadesigns_app

he’s so ready for this. and so are we. matt’s for sure ready for them to go back to school. 🙂 we’ve been working on his sight words for a few weeks, trying to get him back into the school groove because i will confess that this summer we allowed a lot more video game time than we normally would. but with that, comes some transitioning away from games. he’s a good kid, but once video game are introduced, nothing quite compares to that kind of excitement. so trying to make coloring and trains and toys more exciting is a bit challenging.

Untitled

to celebrate the first day of school, we took the boys to red robin for burgers, onion rings and shakes. confession: fried food just doesn’t taste the same anymore. no matter how much my brain tells me i want it, my taste buds have changed since eating so well lately. but when there’s an oreo cookie milkshake in front of me, i will drink it.

Untitled

Untitled

Untitled

tuesday // august 13

a new jamberry design that my mom chose called candy scallop.

Untitled

matt is teaching marshall how to play chess and the little smarty pants is picking it up like a champ. he definitely excels in games with certain rules and strategies.

Untitled

wednesday // august 14

i have been trying to accomplish this feat since 2010. that’s when i took and failed this test for the first time. being new-ish to this side of insurance, i didn’t grasp some of the concepts and i didn’t do well studying by myself.

but with all the new healthcare reform crap, being licensed is a must. so tawnya and i strapped on our thinking hats and dug down during work hours to wrap our brains around all these crazy regulations.

and when we both passed, our boss told us to go celebrate! and we did!

a celebratory drink (or two) with my best girl. #wepassed #margaritasareagirlsbestfriend @tastone

thursday // august 15

i just love his face. that is all. also, he messes around with his tongue when he watches tv.

Untitled

friday // august 16

i actually pulled over to get this shot while i was driving to meet my girls for some karaoke. i may have gotten a weird look from a car that passed by me with my camera out the window. but i don’t care, i love it.

Untitled

i got new pretties today and am so excited to wear them out tonight. i found these earrings and necklace at target, both on clearance and less than $15 for both. SCORE!

got my pretties on and I'm ready for some drinks and girl time and singin'! #pictapgo_app

these are some seriously amazing ladies! when we learned that the karaoke machine wasn’t going to work tonight, we jumped on yelp and found the next closest karaoke bar. it turned out to be a dive, and not in a good way, filled with all the riff-raff you can imagine but we were together and we danced to hip-hop music and then spent over 3 hours chatting at denny’s over milkshakes and fries.

even though our night didn't go as planned and we didn't get to belt out any tunes, I had an amazing time with these ladies!

i adore every. single. one of these ladies. it’s a special find when you just “get” each other.

Untitled

saturday // august 17

we did most of gibson’s school clothes shopping this weekend and one of his finds is this super rad graphic tee.

reason number 574 that gibson is the coolest kid // we found this tee at #target and he's totally diggin' it! #itsallgoodinthehood #mrrogers #pictapgo_app

confession: i rarely listen to pop music. it’s so rare in fact, that i have only one playlist of current-ish pop music on spotify and i actually titled it “pop songs i’m embarrassed to admit i like“. so naturally i don’t have pop stations programmed in the vehicles and only heard this song a few weeks ago when we went dancing.

but now i can’t stop. this song makes every part of me want to move. it’s just one of those songs that gets into my veins and can completely change my mood. and once it’s over, i feel like nothing can top it. it’s THAT good. so i asked my instagram friends if they were over it or still bumpin’ it. what say you?

seriously cannot get enough of this song. it makes every part of my body want to move. are you over this song already or still bumpin' it?

sunday // august 18

happy sunday y’all! the husband got all crazy and picked up donuts early this morning. i cursed him while i shoved these in my face.

Untitled

a preseason match up between matt’s team and my team. and my packers wrapped up the rams in butcher paper and grilled ’em good. haha!

Untitled

hope your end-of-summer weeks have been full of real good life. don’t forget to document it, even when it’s less than perfect.

here’s how the obligatory photo shoot went this morning.

marshall is his cute self, as per usual.

we celebrated our 5yo nephew’s birthday today. and this little sneak (not the birthday boy) took a swig of my rum & coke when i was chatting with cousins. as you can tell, he liked it.

Somebody took a swig of my rum & coke when I wasn't looking. Is it guilty in here?

a huge leap for marshall today, he swam in the pool by himself (and the help of his lifejacket). gibson was there to keep an eye on him but once he let go of the side, he kicked and paddled his little heart out. so super proud of him!

today is the day // marshall finally trusted the life jacket and moved off the steps // thumbs up for mr. marsh-man! #rhonnadesigns #heyrhonna #rhonnadesigns_app

drea lately

drealately_4x4

lately, i’ve been coming back to this quote. it’s quite profound and needs little explanation. feeling blessed to be me in this life God has blessed me with.

Comparison

now….on to the fun stuff!

listening to: i just updated my feel good playlist on spotify, it makes me feel good. old school r&b like the commodores and the delfonics. you can find that playlist here. the great gatsby soundtrack. omg, i cannot get enough of this whole album. song i can’t get enough of are: down the road by c2c, pusher love girl by jt, i love it by icona pop, ways to go by grouplove, and let’s go by matt & kim

watching: summer tv is the best. don’t get me wrong, i miss my fall shows, but the summer brings fun and mindless shows for me to indulge in. falling skies. big brother. a new show called under the dome. sytycd. masterchef.

playing: wheel of fortune on the iPad. as a kid, i would watch wheel of fortune on tv every night and loved solving the puzzles before the contestants. now marshall and i play and he loves spinning the wheel and tries so hard to figure out the words. what i love most is that he’s seeing words come together and it’s also teaching him math when we get multiple letters.

looking forward to: seeing huey lewis in concert next weekend. taking a trip to a beach somewhere before the summer ends. having friends over for summer bbqs. that marshall finally wants to see a movie in the theater. he wants to see turbo and it will be our very first family movie together. seeing the new wolverine movie.

eating: lots of proteins. lots of veggies. tons of fresh fruit. peaches, kiwi, strawberries. anything to keep away the junk food cravings. yesterday i made a delicious shrimp and avocado salad. i might throw the recipe up here next week. Untitled

drinking: cucumber ice water and plain ol’ ice water. nothing better in the summertime. other than a rum & coke.

wearing: summer dresses. ponytails. skirts. shorts and tanks. keeping it cool when it’s blazing hot out.

working on: some pinterest projects. working out regularly. laundry. a new wooden sign for the bedroom.

noticing: marshall is making a lot of forts. he’s phasing out of trains. gibson is getting calls from girls and he’s totally confused my the tween girl line of questioning.

app-loving: the new rhonnadesigns app is AMAZING!!! it’s $2 and i can’t even see how it will ever get old. there is so much stuff that i run into new things each time.

i made this little nugget using her app and am using it for my lock screen. if you like it, feel free to save it for yourself. Untitled

also, momento just happened into my life a couple weeks ago and you can see my review here.

reading: blogs on bloglovin’. really loving having my magazines on my iPad too but i would really love a new book to read. any suggestions? i prefer time period reads versus stories that are set in modern times.

loving: how much i dig our new house. it’s clean and subtle walls and open spaces make me happy. loving that i still love it.

and that’s it folks…that’s me lately. what have you been ______ lately?

5 things // #longhairproblems

hair brings one’s self-image into focus; it is vanity’s proving ground.  hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices.  ~shana alexander

many years ago, i had short hair. and for a long time. i chopped my hair from bra-line to a-line-bob when i was 16. and keeping it short was part of who i was. the pixie cut was my best and favorite style of all. mostly, i don’t care much for hair on my neck or in my face, so naturally, i kept it short.

2010 was about the time i decided to start the grow out process. i had a great stylist who helped me make the most out of each phase of growth.
i knew it would be a long road.
i prepared for irritating stages.
i also knew that when it got to the right length, it would all be worth it.

three and a half years later, we’re there!

as much as i LOVE having the freedom of bangs, no bangs, up, down, half up, vintage styles and experimenting with braids and waves, there are so many things about long hair that i just haven’t had to deal with for the last 17 years.

one // gets caught under my purse straps. annoying.

two // touches the backs of my arms and scares me. eeeek!

three // gets stuck in between my back and my seat when i’m driving, making it pull when i turn my head. rude!

four // blow drying takes the time of a tv show these days. hence the ponytails all the time.

five // it’s everywhere! like seriously….everywhere!

but i’ll be keeping it long. i absolutely love it and look forward to the possibilities.
what about you? long? short? don’t care? i wanna know!

project life // recalling memories

i do not have the memory of an elephant.

i cannot recall some major and minor details of life. but who can keep them all straight, really, when you’re a working mommy/wife with a creative mind that also needs to remember class projects and insurance rules and friend’s birthdays and who said what when, and when matt will be on a shoot? there’s just no more real estate sometimes.

which poses a giant issue beings that my main and favorite hobby is documenting life through scrapbooking. which kinda requires remembering what happens in our daily lives.

problem #1: as we just learned, i’m forgetful.

problem #2: as you know from my numerous project life posts, i’m about 6 months behind.

thankfully i have facebook, which is what i use to recall the funny things the boys say and do, and to remember which pictures were taken when. like a journal, facebook is a great way for me (because i am pretty active) to record everyday life.

problem #3: facebook’s timeline is clunky. i’m not even going to go into the details about how many steps it takes to get to a month of a certain year. now, once you’re there, it’s great. i can see, in order, all my posts and pictures and check-ins. this is what i refer to each time i scrap.

and as an iphone user, i always wondered why apple never made it an option to add a note to pictures taken. THIS would be an amazing upgrade for us memory keepers. or geez, i dunno, maybe show the stinkin’ date in the photo options, something other than just on the file itself when you plug in.

okay, done with my rant. love the iphone, it changed my life, but i was constantly searching for how i would keep track of the pictures and memories all together. eventually, i figured out my own system, which you can read about here. it works, but again, clunky and a lot of steps.

fast forward to this past weekend. being on a stay at home vacation allowed me to spend an enormous amount of time finishing up 2012 (which can be found here and here). and as i stalked pinterest on my ipad for inspiration i came across something that made my heart jump out of my chest. immediately, and i mean like i put down my glue stick and clicked through the links until i found the name of this glorious app, immediately. as i searched and skimmed, i was praying that it wouldn’t be a dud. would it be useful? could it really do what i needed it to do?

holy freaking yes sir it can!

solution: may i introduce you to…….MOMENTO.

Untitled

this free (for now, so hurry and grab it here!) app feeds your social media posts and pics to one calendar based platform.

Untitled

your stuff can be viewed in a list format and can be sorted by earliest first or latest first. i like latest first, personally.

Untitled

or you can see a month at a time and the blue dots mean there was activity on that day.

Untitled

when you go to a single day, it shows everything from that day. whatever you have feeding to momento, it will show up on the calendar.
Untitled

Untitled

not only can it feed from facebook, twitter, instagram and many others, you can add a moment and attach a photo to it from your camera roll, or even take a new picture directly from the app. i mean seriously, this is my dream app!

Untitled

Untitled

momento is now installed on both of my devices so i can scroll and view moments on my ipad when i’m scrapping or make a quick note while i’m out with my iphone in hand.

i’m officially hooked! and i have not been paid to write this post, all opinions are my own. when i find an app or product that works for me, i want to share it with you! if you struggle with keeping your memories recorded, momento might be the thing for you. 🙂

happy documenting!

5 things you may not know about me

‘sup. it’s friday. fridays r.o.c.k.

24906a7d25f995b24caf78c0136a8be4

so how’s about a little fun huh?

here are 5 things you may not know about me:

one // i only get weak with baby fever for baby boys. little baby girls don’t make me want more babies. they make me fearful of drama and inappropriate clothing.

two // i am the only person in my immediate and previously nuclear family who has a tattoo. no one in this house, nor my parents, nor any of my 3 siblings have a tattoo. it’s because i’m a rebel.

three // i have never owned a dog. and i don’t ever plan to. honestly, i’ve cleaned up enough poop for one lifetime.

four // i am usually more likely to buy a dress if it comes with a belt versus a dress that doesn’t. it’s like a bonus. or maybe i’m just too cheap to buy a belt.

five // i played the flute in 3rd and 4th grade. but i hated it and would daydream about playing the drums instead.

and if you’re up for it, do your own 5 things post and throw your link in the comments here. i’d love to learn more about you!

a super happy friday to you!

movin’ up like george and weezy

you know that moment when you surrender to god’s will and allow him to take the frustrations and irritations from you to deal with himself?

yeah, well we’ve had a lot of those moments with the house we have resided in for the past 7 years.

a stepping stone of sorts, and just fine and dandy as a family of 3 when we moved in.

over the years, many things became apparent and getting out was the goal.

we would find another rental that seemed perfect for us, but god was closing those rental doors. we even found one in january that we didn’t even look at for fear that we would love it for the aesthetics and later regret the location and the price. it was not meant for us.

so we stayed. again. vowing that this would be the absolute last year in this crap hole.
we promised to weed out unnecessary junk and things in our lives and our house so that when we were ready to move in 2014, we would be clean and ready and not move any of the junk from the past into our future.

and so the purge began and the garage sale pile grew. and it felt amazing to let go of so much we’d both been hanging on to.

date: early march

me: hey, the johnson’s just bought a house! isn’t that exciting?!?!
matt: oh that’s cool, good for them!
me: we should move into their old house, it’s probably quieter and it’s got 4 bedrooms! it is just down the street.
matt: yeah, but it’s probably a lot more than we want to pay.
me: yeah, probably. insert sad face.
matt: one more year babe, we’ve got to stick to the goal!

until one morning, sunday march 24th to be exact, when matt was trying to edit and the neighbors were being loud and obnoxious as usual, he said: maybe you need to ask jennifer if the house will be up for rent and what they pay.

that was the moment when i could see it happening. so i texted her.

sidenote: jennifer and i have a cool friendship. it’s one where we can go months without talking or hanging out (because we’re both busy family gals) and then we can pick up where we left off like we’ve never had a break in the conversation. we also tend to reach out to each other at the same time. it’s just cool like that.

anyways, she was just thinking about me when i texted her to congratulate her on the house and to ask about their current place.

she quickly gave me the landlord’s number and told me she would let him know i was going to call him. she also mentioned that another couple was interested but that she didn’t know if they got in touch with him or not.

i was hesitant to call because it was a sunday morning. who wants to be bothered with business stuff on a sunday morning?

so i himmed.
and hawed.

but 15 minutes later, i just decided to do it. i called him.

the conversation went excellent!
we came highly recommended by the johnsons.
rent would stay the same price (which was our perfect number).
no property manager.
he pays water, garbage, and sewer.
there’s a gardner.
no one else had inquired and now that i called, he didn’t plan to list it.

the application for rent was on it’s way to us and we decided it would be best to meet in person once we received it and filled it out.

here is where the nerves kicked in to high gear.

date: tuesday march 26
we got the app in the mail today. it’s freaking me out.

i call the landlord to tell him we got it and that we can meet anytime this week. we decided on friday morning, at our house. this will be perfect. he can see the hell we’ve been facing here, he can meet our sweet and mostly well-behaved boys and we can express to him how deeply we’d love to rent his house. perfect. now we wait.

date: wednesday march 27
jennifer mentions that the other couple was still interested and that they called the landlord the day after we did. oh shoot…now we have competition? i am seriously freaking out! did he think i was the other family when i called? he had to since there wouldn’t have been enough time for jennifer to call him and “highly recommend us”. (but she certainly did after he and i chatted so that totally rocked!) but i don’t like situations like this. where it’s not up to me. oh wait, it’s never up to me.

friday march 29:
good friday. my mama’s birthday. i already know today will be a great day. we have prayer warriors hitting it from every time zone.

the meeting was perfection! he used certain terms like “when you move in” and not “if i decide to rent to you”. but of course, did not give an official yes yet. what he did tell us was that there was another couple who inquired after we talked on sunday and that he did think we were them. but once he realized it, he already felt like he knew us and still wanted to go through the process with us. holy freaking awesome timing.

thank god i called when i did. and i don’t want to revel in this too much but my mom told me these things for a very important reason.

he finished by saying that if he decided to do a credit or background check that it could take up to a week but he understood the need for us to give notice to our current property manager. and remember, it’s already the 29th and we’ve decided on a may 1st move-in date.

monday, april 1:
it’s a day off for me. a day of purging and prepping. just in case. also a day of intense anticipation. today is not the day we are going to hear from our new landlord, that would be crazy. there’s no way he will call us, he said it could be a week.

but at 11am that morning there was an email. an email asking for authorization to inquire about about our credit and background history. i immediately signed up and authorized the reports and gave him a call. he told me that as soon as he got the reports and reviewed them he’d be making a very quick decision.
ohmigosh omigosh omigosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3:30 brought one of the best calls we’ve received in years! he wanted to rent to us and wanted to come over to sign the agreements……THAT NIGHT! he gave me his verbal commitment so that i could notify our current landlord. that email was sent with a giddiness i am still enjoying!

and then the real excitement started. the planning and measuring and paint picking. the furniture shopping and desk deciding and color scheming. the “guess what? we’re moving!!!” being said by all of us several times a day at oddly random times.

so i say to you, GUESS WHAT?! WE’RE MOVING!!!!!!!!!!!!

this will be our last week here and i am far from sad. this was gibson’s fourth residence and marshall’s first and it certainly has been a blessing for the time we needed it. but we’re not confused about this move. we’re not looking back. we’re completely confident in this being one of the best moves of our family’s young history.

it’s been a crazy month in which we already had planned to make a movie with gibson for his science project so adding the move to that has been quite difficult and stressful. but we wrap the movie tonight and that means i can continue to pack the rest of the house. that means our lives will start to return to normal. that means matt will be editing an awesome short film that will be treasured forever. (if you want to see it when it’s ready, visit our website for updates! a trailer will be posted in a day or two.)

5 more days! holla!
