weekly wrap-up 2013 // week 7

it feels like the exit of winter around here lately.
and you know what that means?
i feel like cleaning. and crafting. and being outside.

sunday | february 10:

started out the day by cleaning out the game closet. i should have taken a before picture but i was already sorting puzzle pieces and game cards when i thought of it. but it pretty much looked like toys ‘r’ us threw up in there.

Untitled

part of the day was helping marshall organize his room too. he was happy to get a few toys from under his bed. it also came to my attention that under the bed is where the carpet is the cleanest. kinda makes me want to have picnics under here (if we could fit), knowing how the rest of my rental brown carpets look these days. yuk.

Untitled

monday | february 11:

over the weekend i finished this fun string + nail art. it’s okay if you missed it, you can find it here.

Untitled

monday also started off the week with a junk food dinner. oh chick-fil-a, you send my soul right to heaven. but you are the devil sometimes, taunting me with your delicious ways. i must.stay…a.way.

Untitled

the sun was bright and the rays were warm. thus, hula-hooping commenced.

Untitled

and this, my friends, is a stank-face because these cheap hula hoops have no weight and i can’t keep it up. attractive, i know. 😉

Untitled

tuesday | february 12:

the boys and i did a little front yard cleanup and i let marshall help me drive the car back up into the driveway. pretty soon, i’ll be in the passenger seat, holding on for dear life, while gibson gets behind the wheel.

Untitled

wednesday | february 13:

the lights of my little town glow on just the one side of the freeway. i love that.

Untitled

there was no way marsh was going to write his name on all 32 valentines or we’d be giving them out for christmas. he did about 6 and i whipped through the rest. i do love how he wanted to do his best.

Untitled

thursday | february 14:

he’s not completely awake yet, but he was nice enough to smile for me anyways.

Untitled

from my boys!

Untitled

we did the classy and romantic thing for valentine’s day and took the boys to incredible john’s. it’s an upscale chuck e. cheese’s. but when i say upscale, i really mean just a half step better. basically because of the fact that they have a roller coaster, bumper cars and a twister ride INSIDE. 🙂

someone is excited. someone else is less so.

friday | february 15:

the warm day meant flip-flips were a necessity. this is truly where my toes belong. i am complete.

Untitled

saturday | february 16:

i realized this was a hearty list when i wrote it. and maybe my motivation was bigger than my weekend. but i did get 8 things done in my 3 days!

Untitled

gonna take advantage of these sunny days before the rain comes back.

Untitled

we needed 2 carts to shop at sam’s today but the check was a spacial expert and fit it all into one cart for us! $250 later!

Untitled

texted this to my daddy because we always eat sardines together and we have a date to eat these when my folks get back from their travels. yum.

Untitled

this made saturday morning errands bearable.

Untitled

he’s just now getting interested in army men and he’s having fun setting up his battles.

Untitled

Untitled

the battle lines have been drawn. literally.

Untitled

hubby brought home yellow tulips so my lemonade bottle felt useful.

#fmsphotoaday // feb16: a lemonade bottle is the #perfect place for new flowers.

he wanted to wear his mario hat and asked if i could drawn on his mustache too. this is my attempt to wash it off and all his silly faces.

Untitled

sunday | february 17:

a little preview of the new family room setup. a full detailed post will be up in a couple weeks after i complete the arrangements of the shelves and add some flair!

Untitled

matt took the boys to the park for some fun while i stayed home to work on the bookshelves.

Untitled

awwwwwwwww. some of my favorite dudes right there.

Untitled

he’s all tuckered out.

Untitled

his hair. how he wears his hat. how much he enjoys his iPod touch. i love him. right now.

Untitled

this afternoon, matt and gibson and i went to see a play called “children’s Letters to God”. outside of the theater was this lovely lady sitting on a bench. matt was trying to spit game, but she wouldn’t hear of it.

Untitled

Untitled

happy week to you!

week 36 wrap up

football is on and company is on their way so i’m keeping this short today! =)

monday | september 3:

it’s labor day and i did zero laboring. i did doodle, watch reruns of who’ the boss?, and pretty much veg and eat myself into a coma. that’s why the remote feels so far away. pure laziness.Untitled

i dodled this little diddy for day 3 of 30 days of lists

Untitled

tuesday | september 4:

his future is so bright, he should have worn shades.
Untitled

love my early morning snuggles with marshall. he likes to come hang with me in the bathroom while i get ready for work.Untitled

30 days of lists today is when i need a time out.
#30lists day 4 --- when I need a time out

my view when i hopped in the truck. these are my favorite morning skies.
Untitled

#fmsphotoaday is in my mailbox. and today, netflix sent us the artist. this movie will be an owner. i LOVED it. the dancing, the clothing, the hair, the fact that it was a silent film, the look and the music.  A M A Z I N G ! see it, you must see it!
Untitled

wednesday | september 5:

#fmsphotoaday is bright. saw this lovely balloon over the freeway.Untitled

marshall is flying from the coffee table to the couch. can you see his blurry orange shorts? so yeah, we let them jump on the furniture. well, more like, encourage it when there are pictures to be taken. again again!
Untitled

Untitled

thursday | september 6:

everyday is today’s #fmsphotoaday. my goal list is what i try to be every day so i thought it was a good pic for the day. when i posted it on instagram and facebook, i got some questions about what it means to ‘be a duck’ so i want to explain. being a duck means letting the water roll off your back and looking calm above water while kicking and paddling like crazy under water to stay afloat. it’s a good way to be sometimes.day 6: every day (my goals board at work) #fmsphotoaday

friday | september 7:

found this on my desk when i got in. tawnya’s first day of vacation. love her and i’m gonna miss her too. thankfully she’s just a text away.

Untitled

my arm party for the day: elastic star bracelet found at joann’s in the dollar bin (last summer) + new black and silver bangles i found at michael’s (last week)

Today's arm party!

matt and his bff at the giants v. dodger game. they’ve always had rival baseball teams and football teams. but matt didn’t want to start any trouble by wearing his LA hat. bummer.
Untitled

their view. wow!
Untitled

so me and the boys went to hang at tawnya’s for the evening. they enjoyed papcorn while we enjoyed adult type beverages.
Untitled

me and my girls. and who says blondes have more fun?
these ladies are my super rad homies. we work and play together. love them forever.
Untitled
30 days of lists today is midnight snacks. love my snacks even though i’ve tried to steer clear for a while now.
day seven --- midnight snacks #30lists

saturday | september 8:

gibson is teaching marshall how to play minecraft. marshall knows how to place blocks, plow, build tools and kill chickens for food. i’m just glad they were really enjoying this time together without fighting about something.the big one is teaching the little one how to play #minecraft . lots of learning going on here, about important things such as digging, plowing, building tools and surviving the nighttime. #bigbrolittlebrolove

out my front door. but i had to add the ccr lyrics to it, i couldn’t help but sing it.day eight --- out my front door #30lists

hope your week was picture worthy too. hugs!

all of a sudden he wants to be paid for living here…

what is this, you might be asking yourself. a craft? could it be? why yes, yes it is. thanks for being here for my first craft in what feels like ages.

i haven’t felt too crafty lately but the topic of allowance came up and my brain went into craftland.

allowance.

it’s something we’ve never given gibson. our view is that there are certain things you do in a household and doing them shouldn’t result in getting paid. i don’t get paid to do laundry or clean bathrooms or feed them, why should a person half my size and whose only job is to go to school, get paid for doing much, much less?

but it’s probably time. and i didn’t fight it. i kinda welcomed it. because hopefully this means that he can start buying his own stuff instead of asking me to buy it for him. if he’s earning the money, he might be wiser with it. and there’s nothing wrong with that.

so i started jotting down chores that he MUST do to earn his allowance. and added some things that he could earn extra money for.

Untitled

of course, pinterest, being my best friend and all, helped me along the way.

this was the idea that i wanted to create: http://www.etsy.com/listing/83249330/set-of-10-custom-chore-magnets-custom

Set of (10) CUSTOM Chore Magnets: Custom Chore Chart System

but wanted to make them myself, of course. so i bought wooden disks from jo-anns and decided to write on them myself. no time or patience for stickers or mod-podge for this project.

other items needed (not pictured here):

magnets, glue gun and scrabble tiles.
Untitled

writing on the disks with pencil first allowed me to make mistakes without wasting anything. it erases easily.
Untitled

i tried to write with the extra fine sharpie at first, but it didn’t write very well so i used the normal tip sharpie. it bleeds on the wood so write gently and make sure it’s a new one with a very pointed tip.
Untitled

at the last minute, i got the idea to use the scrabble tiles i had left over from an old game. marshall helped me find all the letters we needed. 🙂 i used hot glue to adhere them to the cookie sheet.
Untitled

then i glued the magnets to the back of the chore disks.
Untitled

i stuck the sticky strips to the back and hung it in the hallway, close to the bathrooma nd his bedroom. basically a constant reminder.

and there you have it.
Untitled

anything he can do to earn his allowance + extras are kept up top.
Untitled

when the item has been completed, he can move it down into the DONE section. if all 4 mandatory/included items are there by saturday at noon, he will earn his allowance for that week. he can get it earlier if he completes them earlier. like on thursday if he plans to hang out with friends after school on friday or something like that.
Untitled

i think it will work. for him. for me. for good.

week 33 wrap up

so we meet again!

it’s week 33…are you ready?

sunday | august 12:

today was take12 and instead of putting those pics here, i gave them their own post here. but i did take some other pics during the day.

gibson’s desk, ready for homework.

Untitled
he’s not always a thumbs up guy.

Untitled

monday | august 13:

first day of school

Untitled

Untitled

and so they go... #firstdayofschool #middleschool #jr.k

brotherly love.

Untitled

first day was a success. thumbs up.

Untitled

my outfit rocked too…sorry it’s blurry.

Untitled

a trip to tilly’s and what does he buy with his gift cards? shades. he is so cool!

Untitled

love when the sun shines right on through the clouds.

Untitled

okay, it’s only 3o seconds so take a few and watch gibson and his beatbox skills. he’s getting so much better.

and marshall wants to be just like his big bro. shades, hat, and all.

tuesday | august 14:

posted on facebook:

I started my day with Marshall telling me that he loves me, just the way I am. AWESOME!
Then made an awesome mango/strawberry/orange smoothie. YUMMY!
Theeeeen I heard Bust-A-Move on my way into the office.
Yup. Today is gonna rock!

and then there’s these guys. tawnya brought them in and i started eating them before 10am.
Untitled

wednesday | august 15:

since i couldn’t get the turquoise and pink running shoes that i originally had my eyes on, i decided to add my own flair. i think they make me run faster. ran my fastest mile today. 15 minutes exactly! my goal was to be under 15 but maybe next time.

these rad laces make me run faster. did my fastest mile so far: 15:00 on the dot! #runamileinmyshoes

thursday | august 16:

got this text from matt as he and marsh walked to school. he cracks me up.

Untitled

occupational hazard: ink stains and paper cuts. oh office life.

Untitled

today was a major junk food day. matt brought us jamba juice and these pita chips AND a big bag of peanut m&ms. then tawnya and i went to panera for lunch and added cookies and an entire loaf of cinnamon raisin bread to our order. yikes!

Untitled

working on a craft project and marsh wanted to spell words with the leftover scrabble tiles.

Untitled

Untitled

friday | august 17:

these arrived for me today, from hubby! pretty little thangs!

Untitled

hubby took me to a nice restaurant for dinner before we saw the expendables 2. first, this is a cherry limetini and it lives up to that name. sweet, but soooo yummy! second, the expendables 2 certainly isn’t going to win best screenplay, but the blood and guts this time around were outstanding! yay for explosions!

Untitled

saturday | august 18:

woke up feeling pretty sick today. it’s just a cold bug but man alive it knocked me out. slept in until almost 8…..then ate 2 bowls of this:
Untitled

then fell asleep while snuggling with marshall on the recliner. had to cancel plans with some friends which i was super bummed about.

but i had an appt. to get my hair cut and i was feeling good enough to do that. but took another nap while marshall napped because i just couldn’t sit awake and work on project life.

today was rough, but i ran across this on facebook and it made me laugh out loud. poor wolverine, you are my favorite and so misunderstood!

Untitled

hope you had a good week too! capture something great, eh?

week 31 wrap up + a birthday

by the time you read this, i’ll be back at work. catching up after 13 days of vacation. i had a lot more planned in my head but wasn’t able to do everything on my list. but we still had fun.

monday | june 30:

i played name that treat on instagram and facebook…it’s an IT’S IT! the best ice cream treat. by far. hands down. no lie. for reals.

Untitled

finally a calm night to watch the olympics. my fave event is gymnastics and it’s been super exciting for both men and women!

Untitled

tuesday | june 31:

a quick trip to chick-fil-a for dinner.
did i say chick-fil-a again? oh dear. now that we have one in town, i sure get to eat there a lot. do you hear me complaining? (crickets chirping) i didn’t think so. 🙂

so anyways, he loves his new mariokart shirt so i snapped a quick pic.

Untitled

marsh and gib are playing in the silly mirror.
Untitled

Untitled

testing out the lighting for a self-pic to record my goals, i asked for a little assistance.

Untitled

and i should not be shocked that i ended up with this. 🙂

Untitled

just feeling like the calendar is pretty darn full right now. i go back to work on monday and school starts the following monday and there’s just so much to do in between it all. thankfully we have this calendar, plus i keep all these dates in my phone and invite matt to the places he needs to be. it works great!

Untitled

wednesday | july 1:

date night! we found that my favorite restaurant in napa has a restaurant closer to us! same owners, same menu. oh. yeah. dawg.

Untitled

we took advantage of the free night and shopped for gibson’s birthday presents. then we saw a beautiful full moon but of course, the phone camera never captures it properly.

Untitled

thursday | july 2:

an early morning trek up to the tennis courts. i’ve had a racket for a couple years now, with all intentions of playing regularly. so matt got a racket too so we can play together! it was my first time. 🙂

marshall enjoyed the water fountain.

Untitled

seriously…he’s adorable.

Untitled

gibson was our ball boy and we had a blast!

#runamileinmyshoes was more like tennis but still an amazing workout! so happy to finally be using our nearby courts. oh and an extra special shout-out to @gibson for being our ballboy.

we promised marsh we would stop at the park (just a few steps up the hill) so he could play.

since gibson had a workout too, he was tired. but really impressed me when i asked him if i could take some pics of him. i swear, he look so grown up and he’s only about to be 11. i absolutely adore this photo. it shown off his style right now, perfectly. hat up. graphic tee. sport shorts. black crew socks. vans. boss.

Untitled

just the 4 of us, heading home.

Untitled

having our usual breakfast. this is always what i have after i run in the mornings. egg and spinach scramble, a fruit smoothie and water. marsh is having oatmeal because he needs it.

Untitled

i’m pretty sure i napped somewhere in here.

moving on to early evening.

habit burger just opened up in town too ( i swear people don’t want me to leave this town), so we popped over for dinner.

Untitled

Untitled

it’s a gummy treat that is stacked like a burger. he thinks it’s a krabby patty.

Untitled

he is so boss. dang he’s cute.

Untitled

enjoyed a leftover cookie from chick-fil-a. oh good lord these are amazing.

don't mind if I do. thanks chick-fil-a!

later, while racing marshall to the tub, he looked back at me and grazed his head on the corner of the wall. i mean whacked! see that purple lump? yeah, got him good…stupid wall. it swelled up so fast but with a little tylenol, it was feelin’ fine the next day. he only has a little scrape now. but man-o-man was he wailing. poor little dude.

Untitled

friday |  july 3:

repainting my nails out back while it was still cool and marsh wanted to join me. okay sweetie, come on up.

Untitled

needing SOMETHING to do to get out of the heat and the house, i took the boys, and two neighbor boys, bowling. our bowling alley has $1 games for kids during the summer weekdays. it was the perfect friday afternoon for some fun.

Untitled

saturday | august 4:

today, gibson turns 11. and we have tricks up our sleeves.

but first, sad news. as we were getting ready to leave for the park, gibson checked on albert, who would have normally been hitting the wheel by now. albert didn’t move when gibson stroked his back as he lay in his sleeping den. poor albert, and poor gibson. a kid’s birthday is an awful day for his hamster to pass away. he cried. i cried. marshall hugged him and told him it would be okay. matt took care of albert, shoe-box style and reminded gibson that he did everything right as a pet owner. still sad and terrible timing. 😦  but gibson shook it off and enjoyed the rest of his day. here’s how it went:

we walked up to the park to try to catch a court, but they were all filled. after some time at the park, matt and gib went to play basketball while marsh and i walked home to setup for gibson’s treasure hunt.

when he came home, there was a card taped to the door. in it was $20 and his first clue.

P8040173

Untitled

unfortunately, i planned these clues days ago and the place of his first gift, albert’s cage. slapping forehead. doh!

P8040175

P8040181

after 3 clues and a small gift at each of them, he found his big gift in the washing machine.
a cell phone. he very first cell phone.
turning 11 and starting middle school, we figured it was time to give him some more responsibility. he’s earned it. now let’s see if he can keep from losing it or getting it taken away at school.

P8040191

P8040197

P8040198

my first of many text conversations with him.

first of many text conversations with Gibson, he got a phone for his birthday! happy bday to the gibber!

of course he woke up to his birthday banner, he loved it!

Untitled

all i wanted to do was get a picture of him for my parents. they like to get a pic of the kids holding up their age with their fingers and because it’s gibson, i got all this…..

Untitled

but finally got this. sometimes it’s worth the wait.

Untitled

a post from today while i worked on project life.

Untitled

the clouds rolled in today and are just getting thicker. i can deal with 80 after a week of 100+.

Untitled

before we cooked gibson’s birthday dinner, i had to run off those rolo minis. i love my running park. minus the soccer activity on the weekends, it’s perfect. and look at this view while i stopped to stretch.

day 15 #runamileinmyshoes | short little run but the clouds and breeze made it amazing.

and when gibson says he wants steak and shrimp…that’s what the boy gets. marinated ribeye and sauteed shrimp. it was soooo good!

Untitled

then chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. thankfully i don’t care for this kind of cake so i won’t have to worry about eating it.

Untitled

making a wish.

Untitled

blowing out the candles.

Untitled

sure does look good tho.

Untitled

so that’s about it folks, i know it was long. thanks for sticking around until the end.

flashback friday: things my kids won’t experience like i did

haha times have changed

via

times have changed, we all know that.
the pendulum has swung so far left that we can’t see the destruction it’s done to our kids.
i’ve been wondering lately, how these losses effect how my kids are growing up.
what are they missing out on?
what skills won’t they pick up because technology does it for them?
what does society say isn’t acceptable for kids anymore?

it’s a small list, but it’s enough to make me think twice about some things i let my kids do. i want them to experience things so they know. and knowing…is half the battle.

fairs and carnivals: we remember the delight. the colors. the excitement. but my eyes only see carnies and dirt and fried foods and mass amounts of people. are they missing out? on what? we used to roam the fairs alone until it was time to meet back up with the folks. i can’t even imagine doing that.

driving alone with a friend who just got their license: maybe this is for the better but i can remember the freedom and responsibility of this turning point among my friends and i. we didn’t abuse it, but the liberation was unmatched.

the order of songs on an album: i still know the track listing of foo fighters the color and the shape and the beastie boys license to ill. because we had to listen to the tape, (and then thankfully) the CD from front to back. these kids have EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. available to them and really don’t need to listen to the whole album. maybe they never will. it’s kinda sad to see that part of music making not getting the recognition it once had.

and on that note…

going to the record store: there is much to be said for having a list of music you want to buy and only having enough for a few CDs and flipping through the endless rows of new and old music and that feeling of ripping off that plastic and tape strip to pop that little disc into your car stereo. so much. when i close my eyes, i can still smell and feel it.

waiting until a show airs on tv to watch it: don’t get me wrong, DVRs make my life sooooo easy! but long gone are the days when shows were only on at certain times and if your parent’s took too long dilly-dallying at the grocery store and you missed the first 20 minutes of 90210, boy…you had to wait until the next day of school to find out what happened. you couldn’t just play it, you couldn’t look it up on youtube and you couldn’t call your friend…it was too late. 😉

sharing a room: i never shared a room with my siblings. but i always wanted to. i know, i’m weird and should have been grateful for the solitude. my brothers always shared a room and for their bond, i was always jealous. my kids are too far apart for it to make sense but in some ways, i wish they knew that nighttime chit-chat and bantering and that sense of comradery.

learning how to navigate social situations without a keyboard: my foot and my mouth were best buds when i was in school. many times i had girls wanting to “talk to me after school” because i said something stupid or someone took something i said in the wrong way. i learned how to swim around in that big sea and when it was over, it was over. it wasn’t on someone’s facebook wall or saved in a text. friends were real and you played with them.

what are some things your kids are missing out on because of the times we live in?

enJOYing the rewards

Without labor nothing prospers.  ~Sophocles

we praise hard work in this family. and what’s gonna work? teamwork!

which leads me to this atrocity that we call a backyard. the winter always wreaks havoc on our unmaintainable (is that even a word?) yard and it’s a mess to clean up.

i had no plans to lay a patio this weekend. after all, look at it. it’s all weeds. but gibson mowed so we could at least walk around back there. remember, no intentions of pavers today.

Untitled

so why did we end up at OSH just hours after the previous photo was taken?

2 reasons: i made some serious cash at our garage sale AND OSH was having a no-tax sale.
soooo, we (gibson and i) grabbed our gloves and headed across the street to get 120 12×12 pavers. 60 in grey and 60 in tan.

Untitled

two OSH guys and gibson ended up loading up 60 for us to take home on the first load and so i didn’t have to do much but stand around and look pretty while they worked up a sweat.

until we got them home, then we loaded them all to the backyard. and man-o-man it was HOT!

Untitled

so we took breaks. and when i told gibson we should take a 5 minute break he said, “nah, i only need 3.”

Untitled

this kid worked so hard. had hustle like i’d never seen. really made us proud.

Untitled

once we were watered up and cooled off, we realized that we didn’t really have much more left in that second load so we timed ourselves and raced to get them done. and once we got them all stacked, it was time to lay ’em down. yeah, i’m lazy so i didn’t cover the ground with plastic or kill the weeds first. my plan is to just spray the weeds as they come up. it’s how i roll.

Untitled

super happy that i decided to do a checkerboard pattern. it’s so rad!

Untitled

gibson’s still at it!

Untitled

and i was happy to let the two of them enjoy the fruits of all our labor. now i have a clean space to put my gram’s patio furniture and a place to relax while we enjoy the backyard. we will eat, drink and be merry out here.

Untitled

enjoy yourself and pay them no mind.

i shared this on wednesday when i was hanging out at it’s our long story and thought i’d share it here in case you didn’t have a chance to stop by heather’s.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Pinned Image

via

honestly, no one’s really looking at you or talking about you or thinking about you like you think they are. so you know what? do whatcha like!
i wore pink sweater tights to work. i enjoyed myself and paid them no mind. (even though my office gals said i looked super cute.)

P1188291small

i took gibson out for dinner to Buffalo Wild Wings. he sat on the same side as me in the booth. sometimes quietly watching the only tv with football on. sometimes joking around with his chicken strips. sometimes quiet. sometimes dancing a little crazy to that stupid milkshake song. we enjoyed ourselves and paid them no mind.

gibson told me that he and matt were driving last week in the car and they were having a shouting contest. (this happens often in our house. matt will holler, then gibson will holler louder and they go back and forth getting louder and louder and more ridiculous, each of them trying not to break into laughter.) but matt topped the charts of hilarity when he rolled down the window and yelled out at the top of his lungs. i asked gibson if he enjoyed himself and he answered yes but it was a little embarrassing. then i reminded him to pay them no mind.

marshall wanted to sleep in his cowboy hat the other night. he says he’s not a dirty rotten scoundrel so i let him enjoy himself and we paid no mind to conventional sleeping arrangements.

howdy partner

it’s what we enforce and re-enforce with gibson (and soon with marshall) so often is ‘just do you’.
don’t be anyone else.
don’t let anyone else suck the joy out of you.
if you like your purple skinny jeans, then wear them and tell those little a-hole kids to shut up if they diss you.
enjoy your good friendships.
allow other people to enjoy being around you.
be the ice cream cone and not the gallon of ice cream.

enjoy your life.
enjoy being a kid or a parent or a friend.
do what makes you happy. (except stealing cars and doing drugs.)
make good decisions so you can enjoy your life the way God intended you to.
making Him the center of your life and doing things He would be proud of you for.
He is really all that matters.

now go ENJOY something and pay them no mind.

hugs to you…drea

mom and son journal

do you know my friend kristy at kristy.makes?

well she made an awesome journal for her and her young son to write back and forth to each other. ‘kind of like a diary, but between two people’, as my son said.

i just loved the idea and thought gibson would totally be on board with it. i grabbed some leftover scrapbook paper and covered a gently used composition book. i have tons in my stash so i just grabbed one that had the most paper in it. =)

i wrote him a little note telling him what the journal was about and what to do with it. but i also added a little disclaimer that tells him that even though this is between him and i, i will notify dad about anything i feel he needs to know about. he knows we don’t keep secrets but i just needed to make that clear to him here. he got the message.

this kid cracks me up…his first entry is like a regular conversation. just like i hoped it would. he wrote back right away and i have been the one to hold on to it for a day or two. he’s 10 and he could use the writing practice. he’s got to slow down and he’s got to learn how to put what’s in his head, onto the page. not that he can’t, obviously, but this is where he struggles and i think it’s a super cool way to build a stronger connection with him while practicing skills at the same time.

thanks for the idea kristy. you’ve been an inspiration to me and i hope you know that.

flashback friday: 4 years ago

settling in to watch shows on a saturday night. it was late. gibson got to bed late and i was feeling tired. only a few days past my due date but i was anxious. didn’t think that as i got up to go pee, my water would break. uh oh.

no panic, we’d done this before. wake up gibson and get him ready. for a 6 year old, he wasn’t thrilled about being woken up. call matt’s sister and hubby to come get gibson for the night. take a shower, pack a bag, hit the road. oh the loooooong 2.5 mile drive to the hospital. haha! check in, get a room, settle in again. it’s 2:00am. of course, i’d love to relax but they have to stick me. now listen here, i don’t like effing needles. i don’t like them in my arms or in my hands and i don’t like them when i’m 9 months pregnant. when i had gibson, the dang nurse stuck me 4 times before she got the IV in my hand on the 5th try. knowing this, matt asked to make sure i got someone who was very good at placing it right the first time. but no. got stuck 5 times…as per usual.

since my water broke, of course i had to have the iv so marshall would be safe, but seriously i was having no contractions.  none. we tried to sleep. we tried to read. he joked a bit too. that’s how we roll. what i wanted to do…the only thing i wanted to do was eat. Lord Almighty i just wanted some food. i eat…it’s what i do. but if they had to do a c-section then of course i couldn’t have any food in me. okay fine. i’ll sleep. but with this freaking monitor belt on my belly that’s about 20 sizes too big for my body. ugh.

sunday, 10am and my folks arrive and my sister-in-law and brother-in-law bring Gibson to say hi before they take him somewhere until they get the call from us. games are on…it is sunday ya know. we’re chillin’ and still no contractions, no dilation. nurses are conversing about options. oh and by the way, i still haven’t eaten anything. at noon they tell me that they’ll give me pitocin if i don’t start having contractions by 2pm. that would be over 12 hours since my water broke and of course we all know that can cause an infection if he’s in there with no fluids. okay. fine. whatever.

2pm arrives and so does the nurse. they give me pitocin to induce labor and a pain killer for the inevitable. by the way…no epidural. not with gibson either. just a bit of whatever they give me to dull the pain. i’m a little proud of myself for it. she tells me to let the drugs kick in and try to sleep before the contractions come. she also sneaks me a small package of saltines cause my bloodsugar is crazy low and i’m starting to get the shakes. 30 minutes later i’m finally drifting off when i’m jolted awake by an all too familiar feeling. oh yeah, we’ve got action! down below and on tv. the raiders and playing the chargers.

clear the room again, just me and matt and the staff. and the game. i swear to you i almost ripped the nurses head off when she asked if i wanted the tv off. i needed that game. something to focus on. i may have screamed like a raving fan a few times…but that was just a little pain from the human that was being expelled from my body. pushing at 3:10pm, baby at 3:38pm. BAM! that’s how i roll! and he got to see the game too!

but due to the lack of food and my body’s ability to want to go nuts when it isn’t fed properly, as soon as marshall was out i was all fuzzy and my vitals were wacky enough for the nurses to call respiratory in for me. kinda scared the crap outta my mom who was waiting outside when a bunch of medical staff rushed into my room. of course she followed. it was all good! just needed some food so matt ran out to get me jamba and chipotle. no joke. i was freaking starving!

so now were four of us. we were complete. whole. perfect.

and now…a tribute to my little marsh-mellow:
